Punjab Government E-Bike Scheme Expanded – Increase in Bikes from 20,000 to 27,200

The Punjab government has announced that its flagship initiative e-bike scheme expanded with the aim to provide affordable transportation to students across the province. The program, initially designed to distribute 20,000 bikes, has now been extended to 27,200 due to overwhelming demand.
Key Points of the E-Bike Scheme Expansion
Key Features of Punjab Government E-Bike Scheme Expanded
E-Bikes for Female Students

All female students who apply for the scheme are guaranteed an electric bike. This initiative ensures enhanced mobility and independence for women, aligning with the government’s commitment to gender equality in education.
Free Bikes for Orphan Students
In a significant move, the government has announced that orphan students will receive bikes entirely free of cost, reflecting a focus on supporting vulnerable segments of society.

Loans for 20,000 Students
The Bank of Punjab has approved loans for 20,000 male and female students to facilitate bike purchases. Male students can acquire bikes through a monthly installment plan of Rs. 11,676, while female students benefit from a subsidized installment rate of Rs. 7,325 per month. Additionally, the government has reduced the initial down payment to Rs. 25,000, with monthly payments set at less than Rs. 5,000 for ease of affordability.
Petrol and Electric Bike Options
While the program initially focused on electric bikes, challenges such as battery theft and limited mileage have prompted the inclusion of petrol-powered bikes. Over 5,000 petrol bikes and 2,000 electric bikes have already been delivered to students, with an additional 6,500 electric bikes scheduled for distribution in the coming weeks.
Insurance and Service Coverage
Each bike comes with two years of insurance and service coverage to ensure long-term reliability and convenience for the students.
Progress and Future Plans
As of now, the government has distributed 7,500 bikes, with deliveries continuing on a daily basis. More than 15,000 students are currently on the waiting list and will receive their bikes in the next phase. The distribution program also includes a special reward scheme for students who achieve exceptional academic results.
Environmental and Social Impact
This initiative, part of the Chief Minister Youth Program, not only addresses the transportation needs of students but also contributes to environmental sustainability. Electric bikes are being promoted as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional vehicles, reducing pollution and supporting a greener Punjab.
Conclusion
The Punjab government’s expanded electric bike program is a progressive step toward empowering students, especially women and orphans, with affordable transportation. By addressing financial, environmental, and social challenges, the initiative is set to make a significant impact on the lives of thousands of students across the province.
